Heroic Rail Employee Receives Life-Threatening Injuries Amid Mass Stabbing Attack on Express Service

A courageous train staff member who intervened to save passengers during a multiple knife attack on a high-speed train has sustained life-threatening injuries, police stated on Sunday.

Details of the Terrifying Event

Surveillance footage allegedly depicts the staff member attempting to stop the assailant as the train journeyed between a city and another station in the county. Witnesses recounted a frightening 14-minute duration after the train left Peterborough, with injured passengers running through carriages.

The suspect, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in detention for questioning. Authorities declared a significant event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.

Emergency Response and Consequences

The event on Saturday night led to 11 people being treated in medical facilities after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several individuals have since been discharged from hospital.

A bystander filmed the individual brandishing a big knife and being shot with a Taser as he faced officers on the station. He was reportedly heard yelling, "Kill me, kill me."

“This awful event has created broad consequences. Our sympathies go out to the injured and their loved ones – especially the courageous employee of train personnel whose family are being assisted by specialist personnel,” said a high-ranking police officer.

Union Reaction and Calls for Action

Rail unions were swift to commend staff and call for more measures. One labor official said he would be “requesting immediate meetings with government, train companies and law enforcement to ensure that we have the best available support, resources and robust protocols in place”.

A different association representative urged the train operator and government “to act quickly to examine safety, to support the affected workers, and to make sure nothing like this occurs again”.

Operator Praised for Rapid Action

The operator who halted the service at Huntingdon was reported as being “very shaken” but “good”, and has been praised by association representatives for doing “exactly the right thing”.

“He did not stop the train in the middle of two stations where it’s clearly challenging for the emergency services to reach, but he continued traveling until he got to Huntingdon, where the response was almost already there,” stated a association official.

Additional Details

Police said they got the first distress reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

An observer recounted initially thinking if the event was a Halloween prank, but soon understood from people's faces that it was real.

Police have confirmed there is nothing to suggest the event was a terrorist attack and have asked the public to provide with any additional details.

Rail services on the affected line are anticipated to have delays until Monday, with travelers advised to defer their travel where possible.

Anyone with details that could assist the investigation are encouraged to reach authorities by sending a message a specific number with a case code.
